Maximize cow milk, night management is also the focus ----Reprinted in 《Cow》Magazine

It is important to pay attention to these measures to manage dairy cows at night:

1 Increase night food in moderation

Dairy cows are ruminants with a large feed intake and fast digestion. In addition to feeding a sufficient amount of forage during the day, they should also be fed an appropriate amount of forage at around 10:00 at night, but they should not be overfed to avoid indigestion. Drink enough water, drinking water should be warm in winter and cool in summer. In this way, the cows can eat well and drink enough, which can not only meet the physical needs of the cows, but also enhance their ability to resist stress, so that the milk production can be significantly increased.

2 Sufficient drinking water at night

Dairy cows must be supplied with water throughout the day, and must not be supplied with water at a time. Insufficient water supply will directly lead to a decrease in milk production or other dysfunction. Drinking water should be warm in winter and spring and cool in summer. Drinking water is preferably at 10-30°C, and the temperature of drinking porridge in winter and spring is about 38°C, which can increase the antifreeze performance and increase milk production by about 10%. After calving, cows feel thirsty due to loss of water and their body temperature is low. At this time, they should drink wheat bran water, and the temperature can be 1-2°C higher than the body temperature (the normal body temperature of dairy cows is 37.5-39.5°C). The temperature of drinking water for calves is 35-38°C; the temperature of drinking milk, whether it is colostrum or normal milk, should be fed after heating and disinfection to 35-37°C, which is conducive to growth and development. The production of "small white beef" requires the use of non-castrated lactating male calves, which completely rely on milk for nutrition from newborn to 100 days old. It is better to control the temperature of milk within the range of 40-41 °C.

3 Excellent lighting time

In winter and spring and rainy days, there should be good light, using white fluorescent lamps for lighting, and extending the light from 9-10 hours to 13-14 hours, can effectively improve the feed utilization rate of dairy cows, and the milk production will increase accordingly.

4 Make up the bed

Dairy cows lie down for a long time at night. If the cows are allowed to lie down on wet and hard ground all night, it will not only affect the milk production, but also easily lead to certain diseases, such as limb disorder and mastitis. In addition, when the air humidity in the cowshed is higher than 70%, the temperature is low in winter and spring, and the air is humid and cold, the cows will consume a lot of energy due to body temperature regulation, cold stress will appear, and the milk production will drop significantly. Therefore, after milking every night, the feces in the cowshed should be cleaned, and soft grass should be placed on the lying place of the cow, and some plant ash or lime powder should be sprinkled on the wet place to keep the cowshed clean and dry, so that the cows can sleep more comfortably at night.
